The Governor’s Prevention Partnership, a charitable nonprofit statewide organization located in Connecticut, has a long history of successfully implementing community-based strategies to prevent substance use. The organization wanted to seek funding to implement a program to help prevent drugs from being readily available in homes and communities.
WSW assisted the organization with developing the request; drafting white papers; preparing and submitting appropriations request forms; meeting with congressional staff; and providing additional information as needed throughout the process. These efforts resulted in a $1.2 million earmark for a targeted drug deactivation and disposal project focused on residents in highly impacted areas of their state. With these funds, the organization trained 300 community prevention advocates on raising awareness of the dangers of using opioids and other substances; it also provided tools for youth to talk to their peers and parents and caregivers to talk to their children about avoiding substance use. The advocates also distributed 50,000 free in-home drug deactivation and disposal pouches.
