As America’s 4th largest sporting venue, Bristol Motor Speedway—also known as “Thunder Valley”—is the race day home for some 160,000 NASCAR fans and the resulting crushing waves of traffic. In addition to hosting the nationally televised race, the twin cities of Bristol, Virginia, and Bristol, Tennessee, are developing a Branson, Missouri-like community of mega attractions including the Smithsonian’s Birthplace of Country Music Museum and the Rhythm & Roots Reunion music festival. To keep pace with the region’s projected economic boom and regional traffic concerns, WSW is teaming up with federal officials and local communities to secure funding for expanded Amtrak service from Roanoke, Virginia, to the twin cities. Expanded passenger rail service to Southwest Virginia would connect three million people to leisure and business travel along Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor. It’s an idea whose time has come.
